As a dating coach I am often sent questions about specific love life situations that women are going through. I have decided to post some of those here in my blog because I realize that many of YOU are going through similar issues. I have changed the names* to protect the identities of the parties involved. Feel free to comment below if any of these situations resonate with you.
Question from Maria*
Good evening Kiki. How does a single woman get through the loneliness for the holidays? It really feels terrible when you are lonely.
Kiki: Hi Maria. Thanks for the question. This comes up for a lot of people during the holidays, especially when a loved one has passed on or if you are away from your family members. I have written and done podcasts on the holidays and how to use them to meet more people and how to not be depressed or all alone during them. Here is one that I did with guest speaker Avalaura Gaither Beharry, MSW, LGSW called HOLIDAY SURVIVAL GUIDE Overcoming Holiday Blues & Depression. And here is another one on how to meet and mingle with singles during the holidays: Holiday Mingling.
I think it is important to do some FUN things during this time. There are plenty of parties coming up, so do not stay in the house! I just went to a holiday party this weekend thrown by Congresswoman Donna Edwards at Oxon Hill Manor. It was FREE. I found out about it on Facebook. It is always nice to go somewhere there will be FREE food and drink and music to dance to (we even did some line dancing, which I love!). There are plenty of other holiday parties coming up so make sure you are checking Eventbrite, Headzup-events, and other sites that list events. The Alphas just had one. Most professional associations, such as the Black MBAs, NSBE, alumni clubs and other organizations will be having holiday events, charity events and even trips (like ski trips) so DO NOT STAY IN!!! This is the perfect time to get out and meet some new people, develop new friendships, meet some possible men to date, as well as spend some time with family. It is also the perfect time to forget about yourself and think about others – giving back or serving others in some way.
But it is not easy, so here is another podcast I did on the holidays and being single:
The Holidays are the most popular time for couples to get engaged. Your BFF is expecting her boyfriend to propose!
But what about you? You don’t have a significant other yet. And you DREAD going home because you KNOW your family is going to pepper you with dating questions?
“Are you seeing anyone yet?”
“Why are you still single?”
“What happened to that guy you were seeing last year?”
Going home for the holidays, or even getting through the holidays where you live, can be a challenge when you want to be in a relationships.
