Heard about this on the radio this morning and thought it was a fabulous idea. Yes, people are getting divorced, but some are also STAYING married. Like longer than your lifetime! The below couple was honored last year for their 86 years together! Woo hoo! I love it! Now the Worldwide Marriage Encounter is on the search for this year’s longest married couple. This is the second year of this project for them.
Worldwide Marriage Encounter has been offering weekend experiences for over 42 years and is considered the original faith-based marriage enrichment program. The programs are continually updated to keep abreast of changes in society, and WWME now offers evening and half-day programs that are presented at parishes and other church facilities. The weekend program, traditionally presented as an overnight experience at a hotel or retreat center, can also be presented at the parish where the couples return to their homes in the evenings. WWME has a presence in over 90 countries, which makes it the largest pro-marriage movement in the world. In North America, the WWME programs are presented in English, Spanish, French, and Korean languages.
Worldwide Marriage Encounter offers married couples the opportunity to spend time together away from the busyness of the world to focus on each other. It offers tools for building and maintaining a strong, Christian marriage in today’s world. To learn more about the Worldwide Marriage Encounter weekends online, go to wwme.org.
FROM ESSENCE, May 2010
Happy anniversary wishes to Herbert and Zelmyra Fisher of New Bern, North Carolina, who have been married 86 years. The Fishers wed on May 13, 1924 and now hold the Guinness World Record for the longest marriage. Mr. Fisher, 104 and Mrs. Fisher, 101, took to the popular online social network Twitter on Valentine’s Day 2010 at twitter.com/longestmarried to answer relationship questions. Our favorite piece of advice from the Fishers: “Remember, marriage is not a contest — never keep a score.” The Fishers have five children, 10 grand children, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. What a great reminder that true love has no limits.
